She has decades of experience teaching at the college level—at DePaul University, Northwestern University, Loyola University Chicago, Georgetown University, the University of Maryland, and the University of North Carolina.
Courses designed and taught include:
"During your class, your sentences sounded like the verses in a song. I don't know why, but it sounded like you were singing. I felt every class as a small concert."
-Loyola University Chicago Student
"Exploring Poetry was my favorite class this semester and Virginia Bell my favorite professor. The discussion format is perfect for the subject matter, and I appreciated the balance between subtle and structured guidance during the class period. The students came from many different academic backgrounds, and Professor Bell welcomed comments from all ends of the spectrum and incorporated everyone's thoughts and opinions into the discussions."
-Loyola University Chicago Student
"With sensitivity for student’s needs, Professor Bell works with students through several mediums, such as film, poetry, and the novel. Professor Bell spends class time facilitating class-wide discussions. She is able to lead class discussion gracefully, allowing students to come to their own conclusions while challenging them to dig deeper and hone their analytical skills. As a student, these class discussions were tremendously helpful. Professor Bell pushed me to further engage with a text, and helped me understand how to make assumptions based on the text rather than my own beliefs."
